EDELAC works with more than 200 children between the ages of 5 and 17 in Las Rosas Elementary School, Hovde House, Social Work, and Quetzaltrekkers programs. Most of the children belong to extremely poor families. 95% of the children come from K’iche, Mam and Q’anjobal ethnicities. 60% of the children come from Las Rosas neighborhood and 40% come from other areas and departments of the Guatemalan highlands.

There are currently 4 options to work as a volunteer at EDELAC:

  • Las Rosas Elementary School Program. This is a school that serves more than 180 children between the ages of 5 and 15 every year. The volunteers that are interested in this program will support the teachers and help the children with their reading, math, art and english skills. It’s important that the volunteer has experience working with children, has an intermediate level of Spanish and preferably but not necessary, a college degree with an education specialty. The volunteer also needs to be at least 20 years old.
  • The Hovde House Program. Volunteers give care and general orientation to children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 17. This is a 24/7 job but there are working shifts. The volunteer must be able to speak Spanish in an intermediate level, and have experience working with children and teenagers. Preferably with a specialty in social work, psychology, pedagogy or other humanistic specialties. The volunteer should be older than 22 years old.
  • Quetzaltrekkers Program. The volunteers that participate on this program organize hiking tours for tourists that visit Guatemala. All the profit goes directly to maintain the school and the Hovde House program. It’s a very demanding job, especially during the weekends. The volunteer should be able to speak Spanish in an acceptable level (30% - 50%) and must love hiking and planning adventures. Visit www.quetzaltrekkers.com for more information about this program.

There’s also opportunities for professionals in the following areas:

    1. Psychology
    2. Social work
    3. Pedagogy
    4. Marketing / Graphic Design
    5. Financial advisement with QuickBooks experience

These professional volunteers will have the opportunity to provide guidance on social projects, create workshops for the improvement of our teachers, help in the creation of new businesses that support the children from EDELAC and fortify the finances of the institution.
